The requirements for my project are very simple:
- Wood
- Old Paper (I used an old book)
- Distressing inks
- Cardboard (I used a cereal box)
- Mod Podge
- Glitter
- Sandpaper
Thanks to Jerry Estes, there are several different shaped woods available at Granny's Korner for me to choose from. Since Mrs. Estes encouraged me to do a Valentine's Day project, the heart shaped piece of wood made the most sense.
Next I tore out several book pages and began to adhere them to the surface of the wood by applying Mod Podge and layering the paper until I got the desired look I wanted.
Be sure and cover the sides, as well as the back, of the project so that it looks like a fully finished
piece, no matter what side you look at it from.
Once that is finished it is time to distress the paper and age it by using ink pads and ink sprays to achieve the desired effect.
While the piece was drying I then began to design and cut out a pattern, using my cardboard, in order to layer on top of the paper and give my piece a little more dimension. I chose to design a very swirly pattern which I then inked in a darker, contrasting color to the aged paper background.
Next layer the cardboard piece over the book paper background and apply LOTS of Mod Podge in order to seal the pieces together seamlessly.
I chose to use a heat gun to help speed up the drying process and add more layers of the Mod Podge.
Finally, in an effort to cut down on some of the bulk and folds in the paper along the edges of my project, I sanded down areas of the paper, helping to further distress them.
And Voila! The finished piece.
A very simple project, finished in a few hours, which now looks great sitting on my shelf.
Enjoy!
